An entire monument carved out of a cliff

Petra’s Treasury, known as Al-Khazneh, was cut directly into a towering sandstone wall by the Nabataeans. Its columns, pediments and niches are carved from the same rock face rather than built from separate blocks. The rose-coloured façade emerges at the end of a narrow desert gorge.
