Artist Sam Van Aken has spent years grafting branches from different stone-fruit varieties onto individual trees. Peaches, apricots, plums, cherries and more can share one trunk. Artist Sam Van Aken has spent years grafting different varieties of stone fruit onto individual trees. Peaches, apricots, plums, cherries and more can share one trunk: the forty refers to fruit varieties, not forty different species. This is more than an impressive garden trick. Van Aken also works with heirloom and unusual varieties that are not always easy to find commercially. It asks a lovely question: what happens when growing something useful also becomes making a living artwork?
