Psychiatry is a medical specialty focused on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders.
Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medication and provide a full range of medical treatments. Psychologists typically have a doctoral degree in psychology and primarily provide psychotherapy (talk therapy) and psychological testing. They do not prescribe medication (with some exceptions in certain jurisdictions). Both often work together.
Psychiatrists treat a wide range of conditions, including depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), eating disorders, sleep disorders, and substance use disorders.
You might consider seeing a psychiatrist if you are experiencing persistent emotional distress, significant changes in your mood, thinking, or behavior that interfere with your daily life, relationships, or work. This could include ongoing sadness, excessive worry, extreme mood swings, difficulty concentrating, hallucinations, delusions, or thoughts of self-harm.
The first appointment is typically an initial evaluation. The psychiatrist will ask you questions about your current concerns, symptoms, personal and family medical history (including mental health history), lifestyle, and any medications you are taking. This helps in understanding your situation and forming a diagnosis. Be prepared to talk openly, but you will not be forced to discuss anything you are not comfortable with.
Yes, patient confidentiality is a cornerstone of psychiatric care. Information you share is kept private and protected by law, with specific exceptions (such as risk of harm to yourself or others, or child/elder abuse, as mandated by law).
The duration of treatment varies greatly depending on the individual, the nature and severity of the condition, and treatment goals. Some conditions may require short-term treatment, while others may benefit from longer-term management. This will be discussed as part of your treatment plan.
We offer our psychiatry services across several convenient locations: Abu Dhabi City, New Al Falah City (Abu Dhabi), Dubai (Sunset Mall), Mirdif (Dubai), Al Ain, and Sharjah. Visit our Clinics page for detailed addresses and directions.
A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (MD or DO) who specializes in mental health. They are qualified to assess both the mental and physical aspects of psychological problems and can prescribe medication.
This can vary. Some psychiatrists or insurance plans require a referral from a primary care physician (GP), while others allow self-referral. Please check our appointment or insurance page for specific requirements for our services.
While some mental health conditions may resolve completely, many are manageable with effective treatment. The goal is often to significantly reduce symptoms, improve functioning, and enhance quality of life, allowing individuals to live fulfilling lives.
