On 11 October, Hurricane Simon off Mexico's Pacific coast sent atmospheric gravity waves rippling upward, visible at night in the faint airglow of the upper atmosphere. The storm's powerful updrafts push waves into the stratosphere and mesosphere, but they only show up like this when upper winds do not break them apart and the Moon is dim. A NOAA-21 satellite caught the semicircle of ripples alongside the city lights of Mexico.
