The Fanal Forest in Madeira, Portugal, is famous for turning into an otherworldly, eerie fairytale landscape when the fog rolls in. Located on the high-altitude Paúl da Serra plateau in the northwest of the island, it is part of the ancient Laurissilva forest—a UNESCO World Heritage site home to gnarled, moss-covered Til trees (Ocotea foetens) that are up to 800 years old.
